Easter Peep

Posted by Steph on Apr 27, 2013 in 3D Cakes, Holiday, My Cakes, Novelty

This cake was made for April’s work birthday party @ my husband’s job.  I had seen the idea in a Food Network magazine and thought it looked fun.  The peep itself is constructed out of a 9×13 plus two cakes baked in bowls.  I needed a few more servings, so I put the whole thing on another 9×13 cake.

I didn’t have the best time with the tail portion.  Once it was frosted, it really pulled on the wooden skewer supports that the instructions said to use.  It ended up cracking a little, but not horribly.  In looking at real peeps, I noticed that they don’t really have a pronounced tail like the FN cake.  I think if I did this one again, I would just sculpt a small peak of a tail with frosting at the back.  The beak (also a triangle of cake skewered onto the head cake) stayed on well, though, as you can imagine, its kind of a challenge to ice that nicely.

But it turned out cute in the end.  The peep is covered in yellow colored sugar.  The eyes are chocolate melting wafers.

50th Anniversary

Posted by on Oct 2, 2012 in My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

I was recently asked to make a cake to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary!  What an amazing celebration! 🙂  The “bride” wanted a replica of her wedding day cake (which she had also done at her 40th party).  This time, though, she wanted the roses to be a golden yellow, which is the  “color” of the 50th anniversary.  This cake is 8″-10″-14″.

You Are My Sunshine

Posted by on Aug 27, 2012 in Cupcakes, My Cakes

These cupcakes were for a special birthday party for my cousin’s husband and daughter.  He was celebrating his golden b-day and she was turning 2!  They had a flowery, sunshine theme so we made up some cupcakes in 3 shades of yellow icing with yellow sugar sprinkled on top.

Think Spring!  Pastels and flowers… I made these cupcakes for the reception after my daughter’s ballet demonstration in April.  Pretty cupcakes for some pretty ballerinas!

Something Different – Yellow!

Posted by on Sep 15, 2011 in Birthday, My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

It occurred to me as I was going through the photos of today’s cake that I really don’t do much in yellow for cakes.  I can’t remember the last time (ever?) that I’ve done an all yellow cake like this.  I’m not sure why since I love this color and its so happy to look at.

Today’s cake was inspired by a cake similar in style that I ran across in a trade magazine.   This cake [for September b-days at my husband’s work] is made up of 8″ and 10″ round cakes, iced in buttercream, and accented with fondant flowers.  Real simple.  It went together so fast and I love that when that happens.

So enjoy this lingering glimpse of sunny, yellow summer.  Fall is moving in on us here – we have a frost warning for tonight! (boooooo!) 🙂

I’m a little behind on my blogging here.  I’m catching up today.   This cake was done for last Saturday.  Consisted of the main cake and 12 dozen cupcakes!  The main cake is a 10″ round cake with a giant cupcake cake on top.  The cupcake “liner” is made from candy melts.  The cupcakes are a pretty basic swirl but some had gumpaste daisies on them.  I love daisies – they are a simple and cute flower and so fun.

I picked up a new daisy center maker from Global Sugar Art just for this purpose. In the past I’ve just made a smashed ball basically for the center.  I love how this tool makes a nice shape & size – and imprints the design on the center as well.  It comes with 6 different sizes too:

So here are the cupcakes and cake!

This baby shower cake was to be based on the bedding that was picked out (see pic below).  The butterflies are gumpaste and the rest is done in fondant.

Spring Flowers

Posted by on Apr 15, 2009 in Birthday, My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

If this doesn’t say spring I don’t know what does!  This cake is a shameless knockoff of a cake done by Whimsical Bakehouse.  They rock…seriously.  I hope I did it justice…If you go to their site you can see their version on the gallery page…its the 7th pic I think.  This cake is all buttercream icing.  And other than piping all the lilacs it went pretty fast.  Happy Spring! 🙂
