Something Different – Yellow!

Posted by on Sep 15, 2011 in Birthday, My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

It occurred to me as I was going through the photos of today’s cake that I really don’t do much in yellow for cakes.  I can’t remember the last time (ever?) that I’ve done an all yellow cake like this.  I’m not sure why since I love this color and its so happy to look at.

Today’s cake was inspired by a cake similar in style that I ran across in a trade magazine.   This cake [for September b-days at my husband’s work] is made up of 8″ and 10″ round cakes, iced in buttercream, and accented with fondant flowers.  Real simple.  It went together so fast and I love that when that happens.

So enjoy this lingering glimpse of sunny, yellow summer.  Fall is moving in on us here – we have a frost warning for tonight! (boooooo!) 🙂

Bridal Shower

Posted by on Oct 8, 2010 in My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

This was a bridal shower cake done in buttercream.  Cakes are 10″ & 12″.  The color was a pool blue color with dark brown scrolling and a monogram on front.  Included below is the pic of the dress I color matched off of.

I had the honor of making my mom’s wedding cake in early June.  She requested the floating tiers and said she was using pink but otherwise let me do as I wished.  So I ended up getting myself some new cutters to learn peonies and added in the hydrangeas and roses I already knew.  The rest of the cake is buttercream.  The hydrangea blossoms on the side are gumpaste like the top flowers.  These tiers were 8″, 10″ and 12″.

Chocolate Wrapped

Posted by on May 21, 2009 in Birthday, My Cakes

This was my first attempt at a chocolate wrapped cake.   This cake was for the May bday party at my husband’s work.  It’s a 10″ cake with a chocolate wrap (with a few issues LOL) and chocolate covered strawberries on top! (and chocolate icing 😉  )  YUM!

His and Hers :)

Posted by on Mar 7, 2008 in 3D Cakes, Birthday, Gumpaste Figures & Flowers, My Cakes, Novelty

These cakes were made for my sister and her husband for their birthdays.  He’s not a chocolate fan (and the rest of us are!) so I made him a special yellow cake.

First the “hers” design…I based the design on some fabric I saw on a purse.  The choclate icing is buttercream and the strip is fondant.  It didn’t work out perfect but in the end most of the “flaws” are hidden. 🙂  The design on top is two fold…first it is a replica of the scrolls on the side and secondly it is an S which start’s my sister’s name (Shelly).

And for the “his” cake… her hubby works in construction/home improvement/remodeling.  So he got a “wood” cake with a gumpaste circular saw blade cutting in. 🙂  The saw blade is painted with a silver shimmer that doesn’t show as much in the photo.  The cake is a 4″ round, fondant covered and painted to get that wood look.

Island Princess Cake

Posted by on Feb 29, 2008 in 3D Cakes, Birthday, Kid Themed, My Cakes

Here she is … Emily’s Island Princess cake for her party with family tomorrow.  I had to fight with Barbie a little to cooperate and almost took a friend’s suggestion to take her legs off LOL  But a little knife work later {to the carboard base, not barbie 😉 } and she got in there far enough.  Icing is all buttercream and the dress is covered in a shimmer pearl dust.  The flowers on the cake corners are Frangipani (a tropical flower – she IS the island princess you know 😉 ) and it was my first time doing them.  I was suprised at how easy they were.  Those are made of gumpaste.  The barbie cake was made in a pampered chef 8c measure bowl (glass) and the base is a one layer 10″ square.

This smaller cake is a 4″ one made with some extra cake batter I had.  Thought it would make a fun “personal” cake for Emily.  Again has the Barbie’s dress pattern on it and the shimmer dust.

Island Princess Cupcake Cake

Posted by on Feb 22, 2008 in Birthday, Cupcakes, Kid Themed, My Cakes

Here is the cupcake cake I made for my daughter’s 6th birthday party with her friends tomorrow.  Cupcake cakes are made by putting a whole bunch of cupcakes together and icing over the top.  Then to serve you just take a cupcake off – no cutting! 🙂  On top is the tiara I made earlier this week (see pics below in the last post). I’ve put a pic below of the island princess barbie this was based on.

I was playing around and made these today…There is some things I would do different with the cake cookies but I didn’t really “plan” anything before I went wild with the frosting 🙂
