Red, White & Blue Ruffles

Posted by on Jul 19, 2012 in Birthday, Holiday, My Cakes

This cake was inspired by a cake by Fondant Flinger that I found online.  Though hers was done with ruffled fondant layers.  I’ve seen this ruffled buttercream look all over the internet and I was intrigued by the look of it.  And its so easy to do!  I did a crumb coat on the cake with a regular, thick layer of icing on top.  Then I used a top 104, with the thin edge pointing out and I layered up a ruffle from bottom to top!  Its super easy – the main challenge was keeping my lines straight up and down.  I used a ruler and a level to mark my beginning lines and from there I would just take a step back every couple of ruffles to make sure I was on track.  I would suggest using a slightly bigger petal tip than 104 if you have one.  I had a 126 but I only had one of them and that would have been a pain with the alternating rows on top.  I didn’t want to try to fill in the rows later between another color.  So this just took longer.  But the effect is still awesome!  These cakes are an 8″ and 10″.  The ruffle “flower” circle on top was made with the same 104 tips.

Christmas Gifts

Posted by on Jan 19, 2012 in Holiday, My Cakes

Yes – that says CHRISTMAS.  I was editing some pics of cakes I’ve done this week and I ran across 2 cakes from mid/end Dec that I had forgotten to post!  So here’s one…better late than never!

This was the December work cake for my husband’s work.  It is a 6″ square on a 10″ square, iced in BC and fondant ribbons, bow and holly.

Merry (late) Christmas! 😉

Valentine Cookies

Posted by on Feb 11, 2010 in Cookies, Holiday, My Cakes

Yesterday I worked on these cookies for my 2 daughters to take to class for their valentine’s day parties.  My oldest daughter (almost 8 yrs old) has grown very particular about her cake and cookie designs 🙂  I find it both cute and humorous.  She saw the bridal shower cookies I made last week and loved the designs.  This past weekend I asked her what design/color she wanted for their v-day cookies.   Her reply “I want the back to be light pink and I want a red heart in the middle and make it with the curl on the one side like that cookie.  But I don’t want the crooked heart mom, I want a regular one [see previous post – I used a whimsical heart].  And do some of those little hearts up at the top too.  That’s not too hard is it?” 🙂  She makes me smile – her list of requests yet she wants to be sure its not going to take me a million years.

Well much to my delight it didn’t – I baked and completely iced these during the day on Wed while she was at school….all 55 of them!  They went quite fast really.  Both she and her sister loved them which made my day.  Hopefully their friends love them too tomorrow – but then again, what’s not to love about cookies!

Cowboy Cake

Posted by on Jun 22, 2009 in Birthday, Kid Themed, My Cakes

Howdy Y’all 🙂  Here’s a little cowboy cake I made up for a friend.  Based on some ADORABLE party ware she found online. I’ve included a pic of the plate below to show what I based it off of.  The cake is iced in buttercream and the “bandanna” and hat are cut out of fondant.  The cake board itself is fondant covered and decorated with brown cow spots to match the cowboy’s attire.  The brown didn’t show quite right in color in my photos.

Valentine's Cupcakes

Posted by on Feb 12, 2009 in Cupcakes, Holiday, My Cakes

Valentine’s day is just around the corner ~ and I was on duty to make sweet treats for both the girls’ classes.  I decided to keep it easy on myself and make them all the same and not too detailed.  I did, after all, end up decorating 4 dozen cupcakes! 🙂  It didn’t take that long at all either.  Chocolate cupcakes by the request of my chocolate loving girls…the icing is piped out half pink/half white.  Dark pink cake sparkles on top and then I piped out chocolate pink and red hearts to put in top.  Click an image to enlarge…

Lisa's Wedding Cake

Posted by on Jun 8, 2008 in My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

Here is my first wedding cake ~ made for my cousin, Lisa.  Her wedding color was red and her bouquets had lilies, dahlias, zinnias and similar flowers.  The flower cut outs on the cake are lilies.  Its hard to see the detail – I cropped one out below and you can see some of the detail that was on the flower (actual stamens show and such).  The cakes sizes are 6″/8″/10″/12″/14″.  Fed about 170 and weighed a ton 🙂  We put it together on site but then the catering people ended up having to move the table TWICE with this cake on it that was basically just stacked (you don’t generally do a center support dowel when you assemble on site as its supposed to stay put 😉  But it survived a move across the outside patio then another move into the building, up an elevator and into the inside banquet hall when the determined it was going to rain (and RAIN it did!)

Scarlet & Silver

Posted by on May 29, 2008 in My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

This was a cake for a bridal shower where the wedding colors were scarlet and silver.  Its a basic buttercream covered cake with ribbon around it and artificial flowers in between and on top.  The real color of this is a bit of a deeper red than the pic came out.
