I made this cake for my lego-loving nephew’s golden birthday!  The cake was airbrushed with  gold.

Petals

Posted by Steph on Aug 28, 2013 in Birthday, My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

Here is another style of cake I saw online that I wanted to try.  Slightly time consuming but not too bad.  This was for my husband’s work for August…I did not realize I had done this same shade in June!  Oh well 🙂  They didn’t complain…after all, it IS cake!

Roses are Teal

Posted by Steph on Aug 27, 2013 in Birthday, My Cakes, Wedding & Bridal

I saw this method of decorating a cake online and had to try it!  I have some kinks to work out, but overall it turned out pretty well.  My husband’s coworkers got to enjoy this (and eat the mistakes on it 😉  ).

Hoot! Hoot!

Posted by Steph on Aug 27, 2013 in 3D Cakes, Birthday, My Cakes

This fun owl was made for my daughter’s & niece’s birthday parties in early August.  I kind of meshed together a few ideas I saw online to come up with this.  Everything is icing on this, except for the big ‘ole eyes! 🙂  It is a 10″ round cake.

Catching up & the Lawnmower Cake!

Posted by Steph on Aug 26, 2013 in Birthday, Gumpaste Figures & Flowers, My Cakes

I can’t believe summer has flown by.  The other day as I was making up some cupcakes I was thinking about how I hadn’t posted a pic of the work cake I did for my husband’s work for August yet.  So today I was editing & resizing pics for the blog and realized there are SEVEN cakes I never posted (starting back in May)!  I guess the summer got away from me! 🙂

That said, here’s the first one for today:  A lawnmower, 40th birthday sheet cake!  This one had the specific request for a guy mowing lawn, beer can in hand, with butt crack showing.   Yep, you read that right.  My two girls giggled like crazy when they saw this guy on the cake.

Spring Flowers

Posted by Steph on Apr 27, 2013 in Birthday, Gumpaste Figures & Flowers, My Cakes

We’ve been (im)patiently waiting for spring to appear here.  I’m ready for the cold weather to be done and the warm to stay.  I’m ready for spring flowers!!  So it was fun to work on a spring-y cake like this.  This is a 12″ round cake with lots of fondant/gumpaste flowers – and cupcakes too! 🙂

Polka Dot 1st Birthday

Posted by Steph on Apr 27, 2013 in Baby, Birthday, My Cakes

Last weekend we celebrated my nephew’s 1st birthday!  My sister requested a cake with blue polka dots in various shades.  And of course we had to have a smash cake for him! (and he LOVED it! 🙂  )  This main cake is a 12″ and the smash cake is 6″.  The dots on the main cake are fondant, but I don’t do those on smash cakes as its safer for these little ones to just have buttercream.  Happy Birthday, Myles!

Easter Peep

Posted by Steph on Apr 27, 2013 in 3D Cakes, Holiday, My Cakes, Novelty

This cake was made for April’s work birthday party @ my husband’s job.  I had seen the idea in a Food Network magazine and thought it looked fun.  The peep itself is constructed out of a 9×13 plus two cakes baked in bowls.  I needed a few more servings, so I put the whole thing on another 9×13 cake.

I didn’t have the best time with the tail portion.  Once it was frosted, it really pulled on the wooden skewer supports that the instructions said to use.  It ended up cracking a little, but not horribly.  In looking at real peeps, I noticed that they don’t really have a pronounced tail like the FN cake.  I think if I did this one again, I would just sculpt a small peak of a tail with frosting at the back.  The beak (also a triangle of cake skewered onto the head cake) stayed on well, though, as you can imagine, its kind of a challenge to ice that nicely.

But it turned out cute in the end.  The peep is covered in yellow colored sugar.  The eyes are chocolate melting wafers.

Thin Mint Cupcakes

Posted by Steph on Apr 26, 2013 in Cupcakes, My Cakes

My daughter had treat duty for her Girl Scout meeting in March and she wanted to celebrate the end of Girl Scout cookie sales with a cookie themed cupcake.  We made up chocolate cupcakes with green icing (not minty only because we didn’t know if all the girls liked mint), and a thin mint cookie stuck in top.  They were a big hit!
