A Charming Castle

Posted by on Feb 25, 2012 in 3D Cakes, Birthday, Kid Themed, My Cakes

Tonight my husband and 2 daughters are off to a father/daughter dance at the school.  This is their 3rd year going and they have such a great time.  It is run by their Girl Scout troops.  This year, their leaders asked me to make a center piece cake for the event.  The theme?  One Starry Knight…they wanted a sheet cake but a castle with pink and purple.  Fun!

This cake is a 2 layer 12×18 cake in buttercream icing.  I put a 6″ round cake on that and used some of Wilton’s castle set pieces to finish it off along with lots of small fondant flowers.  The walkway is fondant and made with a impression mat I have.  I hope all of the girls tonight love it!

And a few closeups…

Marimba!

Posted by on Jan 19, 2012 in 3D Cakes, Birthday, My Cakes, Novelty

This cake was made for my cousin at the request of his mom.  We all celebrated together at a family Christmas get together in December.  He plays a marimba and is very active in marching band.  So we decided to do a marimba shaped cake.  He also loves chocolate chip cookies so we made the “keys” out of the cookies!  The sticks are dowels with cake balls on the end, coated with white chocolate.  I started with 2 9×13 size cakes and cut them to the shape and stacked them.

Gimme Some Pumpkin Pie!

Posted by on Nov 17, 2011 in 3D Cakes, Holiday, My Cakes, Novelty, Pie

Thanksgiving is right around the corner…seriously…next week!  I can hardly believe it.  So in my theme for November’s work cake, I decided to use the instructions I found from one of my favorite cakers (Sharon @ SugarEd).  She had a great tutorial for making this pumpkin pie cake.  So I got out my airbrush and went to town!

The “pie” is pumpkin cake (based on her recipe) that I baked right in a pie tin.  I followed her instructions for the process of making the “crust” and airbrushing it.  I am pleased with the results.  The bottom cake is a 10″ cake to provide those extra servings we need.

Enjoy!  And have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

A Castle for a Princess

Posted by on Apr 30, 2011 in 3D Cakes, Birthday, Kid Themed, My Cakes

As I started in on this cake yesterday it suddenly occurred to me that I was creating a castle cake on the same day as the royal wedding!  Go figure 🙂   This cake was made for a little princess turning 5.  It was a replica of the castle on the invite (see below).  This cake started out as a 12×18 sheet cake that I cut to size.  Then it is fondant covered.  The flags are made with a fondant/gumpaste blend to help them stay waving. 🙂

And here is the pic from the invite:

Lego #1

Posted by on Aug 28, 2010 in 3D Cakes, Birthday, Kid Themed, My Cakes

This lego cake was made for a little guy turning 6.  They wanted a #6 from legos and also (to quote him)  “a structure” 🙂  So this is the result – all the blocks were put on individually and made of fondant.

Spiderman & Friends

Posted by on Jul 10, 2010 in 3D Cakes, Birthday, Kid Themed, My Cakes

This cake was done for twin boys who love Spiderman & Friends.  The main cake is a tiered 6″ square on a 8″ round.  The square cake made the clubhouse and is fondant covered.  The bottom layer has 3 characters (Spiderman, Iron Man and The Hulk) made out of royal icing.  The 2 individual cakes are 4″ cakes – one for each boy 🙂
